Hi friends,
I'm Bruce Robinson MacDonald. I have been doing metalwork in a studio setting for 45 years. In 2005, I came up with a bracelet design and began building and selling "Slinks" using brass, stainless steel and bronze. They sold out. I wore mine, often two or three together, and sold them off my wrists and at art shows until I was out of parts. Fast forward five years and I did another batch and switched to using titanium as this afforded myriad finish possibilities AND made them half the weight AND titanium does not react with anyone's body chemistry.
As my large-scale light sculpture took over my day to day, the Slinks were placed on hold until my son, studying mechanical engineering, needed a summer job, and we launched them again five years ago expanding the patterns and color possibles. Again, we sold the entire batch in six months. And now here we are. Slinks are available in four sizes and a range different finishes.
Notes:
1) These are grade 2 titanium. They are 99% pure elemental titanium with fractions of carbon, oxygen, iron, nitrogen and hydrogen stirred into the alloy to optimize the strength and machinability. Do a little homework on titanium and you will run into the SR-71 Blackbird and the hulls of nuclear subs. Titanium has the highest strength to weight ratio of any of the 91 metals on the Periodic Chart. (Here's a link to a few paragraphs about this magical material).
2) The finishes range from high polish to glass bead blasting to extreme heat blackening to wire brushwork to a rainbow of colors. The iridescent multicolor finish is a spectral phenomena. By painstaking heat-treating, we create a nanoscale coating of clear titanium oxide on the surface of the metal. Light waves pass through this and reflect off the surface of the metal. Light also reflects off the oxide layer itself, and this minuscule event horizon causes wavelength interference. Look at these in direct sunlight and you will experience coloration like the blue morpho butterfly or peacock feathers or scarab beetles. There is no pigment or patina on the metal. It will not wear off as titanium oxide is one of the hardest known substances.
3) These are Force Multipliers. The notion is that they will imbue the wearer with super powers. It's subtle at first but wear your Slink and look for your extra and you will find it. Whatever you need, whatever will help, these bracelets will provide. It's in you and Slinks will enhance it. Trust me. :)
4). These are personal objects, hand-finished and assembled. They are wearable sculptures that you can take off and configure into a small tower, a circle of megaliths, a bundle of metal forms. These are a slice of my life and vision that I want to share. Join the band of the band. Look for your ninja skills. These are the Force Multipliers. Be cool. Be kind. Share your powers.
